CHON is a band that has quickly grown from playing local shows in their hometown of San Diego, to earning a spot on the Billboard top 200 and playing on tours with contemporary giants such as Animals As Leaders and Circa Survive. The easiest way to categorize CHON would be ”instrumental rock“, but that categorization would not do the band justice. With their debut full-length album ‘Grow’, CHON incorporated many genres including prog, rock and jazz, and featured lightning quick guitar playing, staccato drumming and floaty melodies, inventing a sound that's fresh, exciting and wholly their own. CHON is a band that has truly changed the game when it comes to instrumental guitar-driven music, and they’ve only just begun.
Ibanez closely worked with Mario Camarena, one half of the dynamic guitar duo of CHON, for many years and have worked closely with him to develop a new signature model with him, the MAR. The guitar is highly inspired by the Ibanez AZ model, and it also features some of Mario’s personal touches to make it perfectly designed for his versatile playing style.

Heat-treatment increases the wood's stability, durability, water resistance and tolerance of temperature changes.
Roasted Maple fretboard
Heat-treatment provides a well-balanced attack and tone and a rich sustain. In order to achieve supreme neck grip comfort, the fretboard edge is finished with a smooth curve.
Jumbo Stainless Steel frets
Stainless steel frets boast excellent corrosion resistance. The wide and tall fret-type offers a quick response and effortless articulation when playing chords and clear tone when playing single notes.
American Basswood body
The American Basswood body delivers a natural and flat tone.
Seymour Duncan® Hyperion™ S-S-H pickups
Seymour Duncan® Hyperion™ Pickups feature a moderate output through Alnico-5 magnets to keep the clarity of the fundamental tone when using distortion and to deliver a clear pick attack. From treble to bass, the overall tonal balance is evenly adjusted and works well with various effect pedals.
Gotoh® MG-T locking machine heads
The Gotoh® MG-T locking machine heads achieve incredible tuning stability, cutting down string-changing time.
Gotoh® T1502 tremolo
The T1502 tremolo bridge features steel saddles and a die-cast zinc tremolo block for a quick response and improved articulation. The 10.5mm string spacing allows for easy picking across strings and its snap-in construction makes it easy to load a tremolo arm.
dyna-MIX9 switching system with Alter Switch
The dyna-MIX 9 offers nine sound variations and can switch between humbucker and single coil modes with just a flick of the mini switch. One mode even simulates a humbucking sound from the combination of two single coil pickups.
